Museum Docent
2/4/26
The Grundy Museum invites candidates for two-three part-time, paid Docent positions.
Do you love historic houses? Do you have a passion for history? Are you a good storyteller? If you answer yes to these questions, then we encourage you to apply to become a Docent at the Margaret R. Grundy Memorial Museum in Historic Bristol Borough.
Having been awarded the Victorian Society in America Award for the exemplary restoration and conservation of the Grundy mansion, the Grundy Museum is now recognized as a jewel of historic house museums. Covering the late-Victorian Era and featuring rooms decorated in different styles spanning the Rococo to the Aesthetic Movement to the Edwardian period, the Museum preserves and interprets the legacy and lives of the Grundy family and their contributions to Bristol Borough, Pennsylvania, and national affairs. The Museum’s extensive collection is highly unusual for a historic house museum as almost all the items belonged to the family. In addition, the house and lush gardens offer spectacular views of the river and Burlington Island.
Docents will lead guided tours of the Museum to visitors and groups, following standard interpretation, while personalizing tours according to the docent’s style and adapting tours to visitors’ interests. They will provide historical, cultural, and socio-economic context, going beyond simple descriptions to explain the significance of the exhibits and collections. Docents will create a welcoming atmosphere, answer questions, and offer insights into the life of the family. In addition, docents will be asked to assist with events, programs, and workshops.
Docents should have a passion for history and ability to develop deep knowledge for the Grundy Family legacy and history; excel at engaging with guests; have excellent public speaking, storytelling, and group facilitation skills; and be self-motivated, adaptable, responsible, proactive, work independently. Docents must be available to work weekends, some weekdays, and some weeknights, from April through December.
It is preferred that candidates have experience working in a museum or equivalent environment. Complete training will be provided. Compensation is $18 per hour. Click here for a full job description.
